How can *I* do that? When a factory reset has achieved little, she is left with poor performance from a device that 2 weeks ago was fine.
You say your iPad 2 isn't a rocket ship - but seeing as it *was* blisteringly fast up to IOS6, why are owners not allowed to choose whether they want the new features and lower performance, or less features and higher performance. Why does it have to be a one-way street?

Ignoring the idiots above are you sure its that bad? Im not making it up when I say mines fine, email, web, social stuff, a couple of games, contacts, messages, no complaints. Compared to my 6+ it's not as good at multitasking, most apps restart rather than resume, but otherwise it's not far off.

Are you completely brainwashed?
What is idiotic about it?
I have an old hand-me-down 3gs ... I wanted to put the "find my iphone" app on it.
The App from the AppStore needs ios8.
A 3gs can't have ios8.
So I can't install the app.
Why not?
Is the 3gs obsolete? If so, why? It's working fine ... but I have no freedom of choice without jailbreaking it.

Look, Apple are not out to get you, do what you like they don't care. If you want to keep a vintage phone running then you're going to have to jump through a few hoops, you don't see many Model T's down at the Ford Dealership, get your spanners out.

Of course they are The whole Android vs Apple debate is like the North Korea vs South Korea thing. Android users seem to genuinely believe that Apple is a big bad dictatorship that keeps all it's users in servitude, where as Android is the land of the free.

1. fire up iTunes on a computer.
2. Select iTunes Store from the left-hand sidebar
3. Search for Find My iPhone
4. Tap the "free" button. sign in with your apple ID
5. Go back to the 3GS, open the App Store, and search for Find my iPhone
6. There should be a download button, tap on it, and it should ask if you want to download an older version of the app.
I cannot say if this will actually work for Find my iPhone, but it does for other apps, well, those that did previously have a version of the app that would run on iOS 6, and also those that the developer has enabled the earlier version to be downloaded.
I you already had Find my iPhone on your apple ID, and I'd guess you don't, then you could just search and download on the iOS device, and it should present the download the older version options, but as said, developers can stop certain versions from being downloaded.
It's not a bad system, I just wish that you didn't need the workaround. the OS *knows* what iOS version you have, and it *knows* what earlier apps that can run on the iOS version you have are enabled, so it should just allow you to search, see you cannot run the latest app due to iOS restrictions (dev specifies it's iOS 8 or later), and then allow you to download an older version.
For paid apps I can see it being a problem, but for free apps, they should open this up so you don't need to use the workaround.

Thanks for the suggestion ... but I've failed on point 1.
I won't install iTunes ... not a chance am I putting any of that **** anywhere near my PC
I've got a phone that can use a wireless connection to my router if it needs to. It has no business or need to go anywhere even close to my computer.
*tinfoil hat.

Of course, it could be a hardware restriction too, not just Apple deciding you can't have it on your 3G.

I plan to keep my iPhone 5 to iOS7. It was bad enough going from 6 to 7, not going to 8 as I don't feel it has any features to warrant the potential issues in upgrading. I have 7 working fine now and despite having most of the "features" disabled, I'm getting decent battery life since the replacement battery and the performance is fine. My wife's iPhone 4 is still on 6 and just about copes.

Do the upgrade, there are a few Apps that could use an update but pretty much all of them are now fine, obviously iOS8 runs on the 5s just fine. Go for it and feel more secure than Jon.

Zero issues too, I ran the beta from USB until gold master, big advantage of Yosemite with iOS 8 is iCloud Drive. Handoff must be nice too but my Macbook is old.

I wouldn't. My 5 is constantly locking up and I have to wait a good few seconds before I can do anything. I'm also yet to find a feature which I would make use of over and above IOS7.

Debatable, they've restricted it to ios 8 or later and your phone can't run ios 8. So in a round about way it is a hardware restriction.

The one from the app store? Current version? I'm pretty sure it told you it needs iOS 8 to run, your phone does not support iOS 8. Now, there is a work around but your hatred for Apple stops you using that, which kind of snookers you anyhow because if you do lose your phone and want to use Find my iPhone you'll have to at least visit an Apple website which would leave you infected with ebola, definitely unusable PC and possibly ***** stuck in CD drawer due to incomplete instructions.

So you won't install their software so that you can install their software, do you see how this is making you look? You do know that you could install a VM just for iTunes, if uninstall is that bad on Windows.

This is a joke, I'm going to have to stop commenting you're digging a hole so deep you may never make it out.
Do you know what's best, throw that iPhone to the ground, throw it hard, smash it to pieces, that's the only way you're going to have a good time with Apple products and it's a shame as you now don't have a nose.
