Funny thing about the Transporter's reliability is I've just finished building and assembling a engine out of a two year old Caravelle (minibus). Oh no, so unrealible to have died so young....well.
.... it had done 260,000miles.
Its failure? Ancillary belt snapped (it had never been changed, apparently), wrapped round the crank pulley and caused the timing belt to jump. A dodgy garage whacked a new set of belts on and sent him on his way. It dropped a valve 50miles down the road. Metal absolutely everywhere.
Even with a mullard piston, metal in the turbo (damaged), kanckered head, etc, it was still cheaper to rebuild than buy a new crate engine. Should be good for another 260,000miles I reckon...so long as he keeps an eye on the belts.
