Minis are the only cars that annoy me. The money they command is retarded against similar cars. I appreciate they hold their value etc.

And those ds3's, sigh. They have to be one of the most underwhelming cars going.

I'd never even considered an r26 tbh with you, how are they at putting the power down?

Having just sold my hawk sti, I needed a everyday car to get me to work and back while I looked for another Subaru.
I recently bought a MK4 VW Golf GTi 1.8 20v for less then a £1000, has a full decat Milltek exhaust system a remap and a Audi S3 turbo fitted so over 210+bhp. And I absolutely love the car, it feels rapid, drives so nice/comfortable and doesn't stick out(looks like any other mk4 Golf) even took the GTi badge of the back to give it the Q car look.

Which kind of makes me think that maybe I should give up on Subaru's and start looking at the new Golf GTi's or Golf R!!

Its French

Every French car ive owned/missus owned had fell to bits, starts with door cards coming loose, then anything plastic on the interior ends up dropping off!!

I had a Megane R26 for 3.5 years awesome.

Best car I have ever owned. Great mix of reasonable running costs & great pace. Good low end rev rumble.

Build is much better than you would expect although I had a Lux with the leather which lifts the interior a little.

Get one that's not due a cambelt & the bills will be reasonable.

Just came out of a 130i Sport which top of your budget may touch an early one. Best Engine ever.

I will have to have a look into the megans, seems to be an equal amount of love and hate for them lol.

I did look at the 130i and I'd love one but would be right at the top of the budget so would probably have to get a high mile one. Plus for that money I'd start looking at e46 m3's lol

Being a bit of a penny pincher the thing I like about the Megane ( I had a Stage 1) and the 130i is both are running 260 bhp yet if driven normally pull low 30's on fuel & I have averaged on a 550 mile trip to Scotland 37mpg all on regular unleaded.

They are also OK on Tax & servicing. M Cars are a whole different place.

But are great fun also.

Meganes are pretty reliable. Injectors and window regs seem to be a pain. LSD

Ahhh window regulators. I remember finding out they came from Japan...... in 2011 just as there was an earthquake. Didn't use the window much then lucky it was passenger side.

IMO, for a drivers focus point of view, Japanese cars is a winner regardless of power or drivetrain. German cars don't give you that final bit they have something missing, although quick, capable and refined is a German trait.

I do like the 350z's only with a bit of a kit or at least a spoiler on though as without they do look a bit on the feminine side. My pal had an import one though which is what Id be looking at and it just felt slow... don't know if there was something wrong with it but didn't feel like the 290 bhp or whatever it's meant to be

Has anyone tried the mk5 golf gti's? The ones with the 2.0TFSI engines.

All the reviews make it look really good but id like some subaru owners point of views

Not had a gti but the tfsi engine is a peach (good block) and apparently the edition 30 is the one to ogre for as they have forged parts and bigger BW ko4 turbo so more tuning potential already there.
Cuprajake recently bought one.

I have never had a go with one but apparently they have good torque to them, especially for a 2.0. Always liked the look of them too. I saw the ed30's had a lot better engines and turbos, same as the s3, but they are still like 10k.

Anyway a remap on the gti will see around 250 apparently and with fwd I wouldn't really want too much than that I don't think lol

Ask yourself why.

Yeah they have good smooth tourque, I have a audi 211hp 260tq and with a stage 1 map will take it around 260hp

Spot on mate. There's just that bit of distance and isolation. The slight aloofness in controls and missing the finger tip sensitivity. The synthesised damping slightly detaches you from the overall experience. The Impreza may be a prosaic, tinny and brash piece of metal but on the right road when you're in the mood it delivers like few others.

Impreza ride softer than many vag cars I've been in.

If the ed30 is too much cash. Look at the Leon cupra, same engine. Better brakes and suspension component.
