yes his wife died a few years back, so he sold his house (on the same estate) and literally moved round the corner into a flat

Social Services can probably give him an alarm to hang around his neck so when he falls he can press it and get straight through to them for help. But he may probably be too pissed to wear it.

Good on you for helping him out, but his direct family should be contacted and THEY should get him sorted out, if they are a decent/normal family that is, assuming he has kids? Things will only get worse with a case like him and usually end tragically.

Maybe loosing his wife is whats drove him to this, maybe he does need and want help but dont know how to go about it or has no family and friends to turn too, maybe you helping him gives him the lifeline that he needs, id probably do the same as you mate tbh, i dont like to see people suffering unnecessarily try giving someone a ring and see what comes of it. Is the samaritans still going?

Sounds as though he needs help, I think those that suggest ignoring it are heartless. I'm sure he doesn't want to live like this.

He probably needs help when he falls over or gets ill, but the 'lifestyle' sounds like a 'choice', in so far as these things are 'choices'. People get older, they get battered by life, it becomes easier just to slowly slip away...a relief even.

Well it's all guessing just assuming he wants to live like that, who knows what may have driven him to it. But the best thing is to get him help then it is down to him whether he takes it or not. You have then done your bit.

I would have thought Age Concern and Social Services were the first point of call. If he is living in **** and p!ss then he is also a public health risk to his immediate neighbours and on those grounds alone Social Services may have to get involved.

As an ex-response police officer, I can tell you that there is no point in calling plod, as unless he's threatening to kill himself, they won't section him or "take him to a place of safety".

Is the local shop allowed to sell booze at the time he goes to buy it? If he's already wankered when he goes, it's an offence for them to sell it to him. Reporting the shop for serving outside it's granted hours may result in them simply making him wait longer to buy, which in turn may just make him buy more when they are allowed to be open. If they get shut down, he'll have to travel further afield. Don't buy it for him, as you are liable for supplying a drunk person with alcohol, which may result in you being fined £80.

Next time he's lying in the road, make sure you don't run over him. It's the safest way for you. You can't be fined for doing nothing, whereas you can get in trouble for buying him booze and your cars/clothes etc will stink if you do decide to help, plus if he gets injured whilst you try to help, there is no guarantee that you will be seen as a good Samaritan - especially if he's to wankered to know what's really going on (sad but true).

When I was a kid one of my mates had a neighbor who was a late middle aged woman. She lived alone would almost never leave the house. She used to get a taxi driver to drive to the off licence every morning and get her a big bottle of gin.

The sad thing is, all these hopeless old alcoholics were almost certainly once young people full of hope.

He generally tries to get to the shop at 7am when it opens. It is a local corner type shop probably about 250m from his house. Not sure if they should sell at that time, but he seems sober at that time (as mentioned he is a big bloke and must have been drinking heavy since his wife died)

Have rang adult services at the local council, they didn't really know what to do so they are going to call me back and we can take it from there. Funnily I have not seen him this week
