Was really creepy and unnerving. No idea how anyone could have thought that it was for real but good tv nonetheless.
I was only 20 back then...was broadcast on Halloween iirc; a few scary bits but mostly hammed up. Classic BBC stuff really

In a way but one is a kids program in which you expected zero encounters with spooky activity. With Most Haunted you know they are going to scare you.

At the time it was 'Going Live' turning slowly into the 'Exorcist.' Nobody watching at home was prepared to hear a bang on the pipes let alone a Paedophile cross-dressing mutilated poltergeist terrorising the kids.

Put perfectly...

There was no reason to believe anything they showed that night but it was done in such a way that it lulled you into a false sense of security and eventually people ended up filling their trousers - an 11 year old me included.

I'd say 99% of the Country thought the first hour was real as nothing happened and host Micheal Parkinson isn't an actor!

People twigged pretty quick but by then it was just sh*t scary anyway.

Likewise, I watched it with a couple of mates. I think it was because it was put forward as a serious and sceptical documentary with 'trusted' bbc cast. I fell for it totally

I remember being freaked out as an 11 year old .. lol.. don't think I watched it all ..

Wouldn't work as well these days

The 90-minute film was a horror story shot in a documentary style and appeared as part of BBC Drama's Screen One series. It involved BBC reporters performing a live, on-air investigation of a house in Northolt, Greater London, at which poltergeist activity was believed to be taking place. Through revealing footage and interviews with neighbours and the family living there, they discover the existence of a malevolent ghost nicknamed Pipes (the children in the house had asked their mother about noises heard, and she said it was the pipes, hence the name). As the programme proceeds, viewers learn that Pipes is the spirit of a psychologically disturbed man called Raymond Tunstall, himself believed to have been troubled by the spirit of Mother Seddons – a 'baby farmer' turned child killer from the 19th century. In the course of the programme Pipes makes various manifestations which become more bold and terrifying, until, at the end, the frightened reporters realise that the programme itself has been acting as a sort of "national séance" through which Pipes was gaining horrific power. Finally, the spirit unleashes its power to the fullest extent, dragging Sarah Greene to her probable death behind a doorway and then escaping to express poltergeist activity throughout the country. He takes control of the BBC studios and transmitter network, using the Ghostwatch studio as a focal point and possessing Michael Parkinson in the process.
