Default JDM 2.0 STI or UK 2.5 STI

Hi all..
Having previously owned a JDM classic STI a few years back, and a friend recently buying two Type R's fresh from Japan (one to sell) I've got the Scooby itch BIG time. I currently own a completely standard CLS 500 and love the car but will not be able to keep this AND an impreza... so.... my dilemma...

I've been looking at Hawkeye JDM STI 2.0's.... depending on the auction these can be gotten for anyway from £4.5 to 9k + transport/insurance/taxes/registration ETC ETC ontop of a 6-8 week wait....I'm an impatient **** and don't fancy waiting... so that got me looking at the hawkeye UK stis... but they have a 2.5 block and having a quick scan of the interweb it appears this engine is very weak, all the cars im looking at are sub 60k miles... is this the magic mileage where things go pop?

JDM or UK????

Few cars I've seen in the UK I like the look of...are ANY of them known to the forum? would like to pick the brains of previous owners/go through their build threads eTC

This one has a few choice mods... alot of mods for little mileage?

This one I like, but not the mesh so much.... LOVE white impreza's to, but can I agree with the price increase just for the paint?

This one states it has already had a forged rebuild, but no mention of whom done it...yes I could ask, but I don't like wasting people's time, especially when I haven't narrowed down a colour yet (White or Grey incase you hadn't realised)

Anyway, you get the idea..... JDM or UK? I couldnt afford a rebuild £5k? if they're prone to popping...I don't bray my cars everywhere, but I also don't want to be scared of hitting the loud pedal...

Has anybody had any experience with the mentioned dealerships? I'm always dubious..

all comments welcomed and thanks in advance!

If buying a 2.5 then either get a ready made forged or factor in atleast 4k..

Prob best to avoid Cheshire performance! (Search for them..you'll understand)

I would also suggest that if your spending that much monies.. Then just get an AA inspection or similar... IMHO worth it's weight in gold.

Just be patient and wait for one to come up that's had a proper engine build, or a JDM to come up over here. Looking at the prices in Japan I can't see you'd be better off buying one from there when it's finally on the road here.

2.5's can go bang whenever they feel like it.
Personally I'd avoid a standard one, get a forged motor.

Thanks for the replies people...

atleast I've decided now that it has to be white, and a hawkeye... if I get JDM I'll get standard unequal headers and have them ported so I can get hte burble back...

If I get a UK one, i'll start saving for a forge rebuild What sort of build would I be looking at if there was nothing wrong with the engine but drove it into, for argument sake, API/Engine Tuner for a forged rebuild? nowt fancy or upgraded?.... prevention better than cure and all that.... I'm hoping it's cheaper than waiting for the engine to shat itself then rebuild from there....

There's a white 55 plate JDM hawk on PH for £12,799. I have no connection with the seller.

well spotted!!! £12,799 is out my budget alass but bloody good find...does make you wonder why all that work was done within 1000 miles and then being sold... I assume RCM's headers are unequal?

Don't quote me as I'm no expert... But I'm not sure if fitting unequal length manifold to a JDM is a straight swap...??

One of the other lads will be able to help better

Get the forged rebuild done by a reputable builder.. Like the ones you've just mention.. Your looking at around 3.5k minimum.. You'll want other things whilst it's apart like updated head bolts, modified oil pump, up rated head gaskets etc... The list is long... Very long... IMHO I wouldn't do it again without getting the block closed... Stupid me

You want a JDM hawk and in white??? Hope you got a lot of money!! Think you will struggle to pick one up for less then £13-14k. Even a white JDM blob your looking over £10k+.

£9K might get you a early blob JDM, but cant see it being white unfortunatly!!!

A JDM hawk is twin scroll and have equal length headers which is why they have no burble and I think buying one and changing that set up would be a shame as that's what a JDM is all about!! So you would probably be best off finding a forged UK hawk imho!!

If you were going to go to the hassle of importing, surely you would import the STI?

Is the burble something that can be recreated with an exhaust?

Nope. JDM Newage WRX will be a far faster car and a lot more usable once tuned up to 360bhp (460 STI equivalent).

I can't think of a better car to own tbh now knowing what I do about them.

My JDM burbles beautifully. It'll cost you a Genome exhaust system.

and dont destroy the better JDM engine at great expense by losing the manifold and replacing it with a poverty spec one, that is quite retarded. If your bothered about a sound, get a CD, record a poverty spec UK car, then put it on on your CD player.

As soon as youve heard a JDM redline formula one scream, that silly burble addiction will of gone faster than a prostitute that just got paid.
