When idling, the engine revs between 300 and 1000rpm. Had the ECU changed and the MAF. Still no remedy. There are also no fault codes being registered. One suggestion was an air leak. Any ideas or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Mine does the same... runs perfect on throttle extra and never stalls... sometimes tick over is perfect other times lumpy as hell.... I just ignore it... but perhaps there is a problem.

Watching this thread to see if anyone knows a solution.

Mine seemed to appear after I changed the backbox but it could have been a coincidence... changed to an STi box.

I have the same problem on a MY99. Raised the topic on Drivetrain a while ago. Suggestions there varied from MAF to Lambada sensor. I took mine to the dealer diagnostic showed no faults. They suggested that it may be MAF,crankcase sensor, Lambada sensor or an air leak. Going on what other people told me in drivetrain and elsewhere I think the lambada sensor is the most probable cause. I'm waiting for the fault code to show up cause I don't fancy having to pay for it myself (mind u I think the car might be shook to bits first)

Cheers guys, that's certainly food for thought. I just want to try and get it sorted ASAP. It's no good having one of the nicest motors on the road and have it sounding like a dog when you're just idling. I'll post the source of the problem when I finally get it sorted.

Mine did this and it was always the same - the vacuum (?) pipe that goes to the fuel regulator had blown off. Now held on with clamps and no probs. Its a fairly obvious thing so is unlikely to be your cause - although that pipe may be split ??

I had a freind who does this!.
On his it was the MAF you can check it. by removing the cable from the MAF sensor when it is on tickover.
If it is the MAF then it stabiles at normal tickover.
