Ello, what does adjusting the 'rate' in your console do to your ping? I read that you are supposed to look at your rate, then set it to the existing rate +100 as it can improve your cennection. Well I ended up setting mine to 20000 and it did bugger all! That was adding about 12000 onto it!

Not that I am complaining about having a ping of 30, just trying to find a way to enter the realm of vvvvvvvvvlpb so steve has trouble typing it as quick when he unloads 500000 rounds at my head and then I shoot him with a pea shooter five minutes later.

Most of that stuff really only applies to modems. Not sure you're going to improve a png of 30, given I'm getting 15ish across a bit of ethernet, and there are considerably more hops between you and the server and more load on the server itself.

I am looking to go sub zero on my ping, I am afraid that it may open up a worm hole and disrupt the space time continuum leading to a possible collapse of the entire universe. It is worth the risk to annoy steve some more though

 

Doesn't the "world champ" of CS play on a ping of 1 or sommat really stupid? Sure I read that somewhere. How the heck does he manage that?

 

The rate on client sets how much data can be received from the server. It has an effect on lag but not on pings unless you flood you connection.

The maximum rate is capped on both the locked and rogue server so setting your rate higher then these caps can have bad effects.

The caps are:
rogue: 6000
locked: 8000


The recommended rates are:
56k: 3500
isdn: 5000
adsl/cable: 6000 - 9999 (because of caps 6000)

I've tweaked my ping "up" slighty... the easyest way to increase / decrease your ping is cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate. also if you turn on the net_graph 2 you can see more info about the packets if the top bar (green/yellow and occasionally red) is green all the time thats the best. if it goes yellow that means the server can send more info too you and red means packet loss.

anyway I've got mine set to 40 40 (gives a ping of 30-35 ish)but I do generally tweak ingame depending on the server. If I drop the amount of info I send & recive I Can get it sub 20's but I find its much better with the more regular updates. just IMHO

P.S Sunday afternoon, whilst most of you were lanning it up, I looked at the STi server and saw that there were 10 people playing, thought wahay and jumped on, played two rounds with various people like (bbq)steve (bbq)chef (tag)cheater and thought wtf, took me two rounds to realise they were bots !

Nasty people embarassing me like that, I was sat all on my own playing with non existant people and still blushed !

I feel so stoOopid !

I did that as well, I went on the server and I was going to Reaper "Alex, alex is that you??" to which I got the reply "wasssssssaahhhh" I then asked him a series of questions to which I got no reply. Orbv then informed me they were bots.
