Question

seems like a simple question, but i am trying to back up files from my work laptop, a 2+ year old dell dimension (pentium II)on windows NT, onto my home PC so i can burn them onto a CD on my CD writer.

My home PC is an 850 pentiumII gateway machine. Can i connect the 2 with a serial cable or USB? The files are about 300MB so would take an eternite to transfer by floppy, any help would be appreciated. Worried that i cannot alter too many settings on the works laptop as it it administrator protected, cant even get it to work with the USB port with my digital camera...

Laplink will do it and it comes with a custom made USB to USB cable.

You can buy Laplink at PC World

oh right NT doesn't use USB. What, so no service pack can address that ? Its just a software problem. Oh well, serial is soooo slow but laplink handles that too. Parallel too.

Other Options:
1. Upgrade laptop to Win2k or XP for USB & get a zip250 drive,etc
2. Buy an external CDRW for your laptop.
3. Get some firewire.

2 network cards (you may have a network RJ45 hole in your laptop already)

and a twixsted RJ45 cable, then set up a cable to cable connection.....thats the way I do it anyway - Laplink can be painfully slow sometime I find....
