seems like a simple question, but i am trying to back up files from my work laptop, a 2+ year old dell dimension (pentium II)on windows NT, onto my home PC so i can burn them onto a CD on my CD writer.
My home PC is an 850 pentiumII gateway machine. Can i connect the 2 with a serial cable or USB? The files are about 300MB so would take an eternite to transfer by floppy, any help would be appreciated. Worried that i cannot alter too many settings on the works laptop as it it administrator protected, cant even get it to work with the USB port with my digital camera... |
Laplink will do it and it comes with a custom made USB to USB cable.
You can buy Laplink at PC World |
Erm.. USB doesn't work with NT4
|
oh right NT doesn't use USB. What, so no service pack can address that ? Its just a software problem. Oh well, serial is soooo slow but laplink handles that too. Parallel too.
Other Options: 1. Upgrade laptop to Win2k or XP for USB & get a zip250 drive, etc 2. Buy an external CDRW for your laptop. 3. Get some firewire. |
2 network cards (you may have a network RJ45 hole in your laptop already)
and a twixsted RJ45 cable, then set up a cable to cable connection.....thats the way I do it anyway - Laplink can be painfully slow sometime I find.... |
