Scoobysport Cibie Oscar+
I've delved into the archives to find out about the above, and have found that they are generally highly rated - except for the bulb life issue. Have Cibie/SS sorted this yet? How big an issue is it in real terms? I'll be buying a pair in the next few weeks.

<<HID's are megabucks, though. Don't think I can justify paying that much for lights.>>
Whooo hooo......do a comparison first, then say that
:
Try www.hella.co.uk they have a virtual light tunnel on there where you can compare ALL their lights, and the standard 1000ff is very close to an Oscar.

From: North Yorks, MY03 PPP, now run a Mondeo ST TDCI 06
Had them on my old MY00, new bulbs every couple of weeks. Just before I traded it in I downgraded to 100W bulbs, as I don't have the car any more, not sure if the plan worked!

Had them on mine for 2 years plus. One bulb after a couple of weeks, fluke, otherwise fine.
I had HID headlights (dipped beam not driving lights) on my current car and the 130W Oscars are better by a significant margin.

Not surprised your Oscars atre better than HID dips
:
Put them against some HID DRIVING LIGHTS though, and as the Frenchman who demonstrated to me the first set of Cibie Super Oscars I'd seen, said: "C'est la nuit pour vous!!"
I had Lucas "Flamethrower" spotlights with 48W BPF bulbs, his were Super Oscar Halogen, 55W.
An HID used as main beam is awesome as it produces a halogen equivalent of 300W.
