Thanks for that - I just went DSL and have a zoom modem on loan while I wait on my router - being totally paraonoid I connect and disconnect just like I was still on ISDN !

Another vote for Sygate - very nice program. Always found it was quicker on my old machine than ZoneAlarm. Not a problem with my new PC, but I do like Sygate. There are some nice features on the Pro version aswell - including a half decent attempt at IDS. I wouldn't even consider running such programs as KaZaA without this kind of protection (even then I'd be very cautious).

Hi again Jack - yep, gave up in the end and bought XP home. AM not yet at the stage of trusting the thing to even have the NTL cable in the back of the machine all the time until I've convinced myself it's protected.
Thanks for the responses everyone - is it worth buying the Pro versions of the firewalls (silly questions huh?) rather than using the freeware

Depends on what you want. Anything is better than nothing. For most people the free versions will be fine. I would start with that. If you find yourself wanting to use some of the extra features or fine tune your own security, then upgrade to the Pro version.
