I have added a WiFi component to my wired LAN (Linksys 802.11 kit) and I have the iPAQ handheld successfully on the Internet. So far, so good. It's bolted-down, so fairly secure - but I want to do more with it now.

Doing stuff like MSN Messenger and web browsing is OK - but I want to be able to browse my workgroup/LAN file-shares. i.e. to play MP3s from a PCs hard drive. How do I do that? I've not seen anywhere in CE (using Pocket PC 2002) that mentions joinging a network (apart from corporate VPNs, etc). Is workgroup/LAN networking beyond the capabilities of PPC devices?

I'd also like to be able to Sync with my desktop's ActiveSync app. How do I hook the handheld and desktop together over the wireless link?

Any suggestions on places to read-up on things like this?

Had the same problems with bluetooth on my Ipaq. Syncs ok. Internet ok. File transfer ok. Just can't access network files. Never did fix it.

Maybe it's impossible?

Have you tried \\machine name in the browser? I'm hoping this works as I've just gone wireless and intend on getting an Ipaq on my next US trip.

Yes - I've tried \\machine name and also by IP as well. The error message is ambiguous. It's not clear whether the resource can't be found or whether I didn't have rights to that resource. Problem is I can't seen anywhere in PPC2002 to specify what workgroup the device should be a member of.
