Ok, so I have a noo job, and need a sensible car (read not scoob) to take clients out in etc. So, I have a plan.

Rather than spend 10k on a compromise car (like an A3/Golf 1.8T), I'm going to buy an older A4 for sensible, and spend some money on a weekend/track car.

Granted that I can't afford a caterham on that, nor (likely) a westfield, what are the best of the rest? I'd like it to have cycle wings(!) What should I be looking at?

Also, where are the best places to look for such a car?

If you want to keep the costs down (really low) then maybe the "one kit, one donor" approach some companies offer would be of interest.

Get a like minded friend also with £5k and spend £10k between you on a decent Westfield/Caterham and share its on-going running costs.

You'll get a better car, lower bills and drive it as much as you would if you owned it yourself anyway.

Sorry, do you mean 10k is A4 plus track car, or do you mean 10k for the track car?

I think that Caterham Graduates cars - with their own racing series - are available from 8k, I could be wrong. And as you have to keep them to a certain spec to be allowed to race in the series, it stops you spending too much on upgrades

 

I mean 10k the lot - so around the 4, mybe 5k mark for the toy!

Ideally I want to buy one secondhand, or a not quite finished kit - I don't have that much time, or a decent build area!

Wondered when you'd get that in

Been offered a 59k mile 2.8 quattro, 98, leather etc., 7495 asking, which is a touch tempting... but then again, it's going to guzzle fuel as badly as the ol' scoob!

Been trying to work out what the tax hit on the free fuel is; if it's not amount dependant I might be tempted.

Realistically looking at something like a T-sport (cheper to ins.), on an N or so.

You liked the westie then? I fancy something more focussed than the scoob - 'twas too much of a blunt instrument

Nah, don't want to drive with my eye on the fuel guage; that's one of the things that spoiled the scoob - always trying to curb the urge to let it off the leash

 

POC you have done a 100 miles on 1/4 of a tank,you must have one big tank man,on track my car last about 25 mins then it's out of gas,worked out at about 7mpg These cossie do like to drink.

I would avoid RobinHoods like the plague - they don't handle (unless you do a lot to them) and are seriously lardy for that type of car.
Be careful with old Westfields - there are a lot of dogs out there.

is that locost as in cheap, or as in the race series?

Do you know what to look for in a westie? I've been offered one with a fiat 2ltr, which is a little out of the ordinary, but the car seems to have reasonable pedigree / history, and the engine is recently rebuilt. It's also going to need SVA'ing.
