Default Pad recommendations please....

I’m after some suggestions please for brake pads for a 2006 Hawk Sti. At the moment I have some crappy budget pads on there, as when I bought the car, it had some Ferrodo DS2500’s on, that had been absolutely destroyed. The garage changed these on my request but clearly put the cheapest available pads on that money can buy. After recently being given a passenger ride in a friends EVO 6, I was utterly amazed by its stopping power, using Brembo callipers that are older than mine (I’m assuming that in theory mine should be slightly better due their age/development in technology).
I’ve heard so many conflicting reports on Ferrodo’s, EBC’s, performance friction z etc, etc, etc.
I’m after something that is not going to break the bank, doesn’t squeal too bad, and wont chew discs too badly. I must admit, my car doesn’t get given much abuse, and certainly doesn’t go on track, but it would be nice to have some good stopping power for the odd occasion that I require it. Any advice would be appreciated!

Get it touch with Alyn / "stockcar" of AS Performance. He will explain all over the phone and can supply all pads.

It may sound like a silly question, but can you use the performance friction z pads with standard discs or do you need the matching discs to accompany them?

You can use any pad on any disc , a grooved disc would work better than a plain disc but both will work

Always used Ferodo DS2500 myself, a new set have actually just gone in.
I find them very assuring.

only issue these days with ds2500 is the pricing in certain applications

we still stock these and also a similiar alternative in the newer Brembo Sport pads that offer more competitive costs (as well as the various other brake components)

Aside from overheating your brakes from continued hard braking,
surely the limiting factor is tyre grip.

Yes, yes, I know brakes are important along with suspension, settings, etc but ultimately, if your brake setup can lock your wheels or activate ABS then changing pads will not slow you any faster.

I appreciate that, but the thing with my brakes, like I said, they currently have the cheapest pads on there that money can buy. They barely have enough bite to induce the ABS system, and there is no real progression in them. The odd time that the cars had a spirited drive, they've just faded. I don't expect budget pads to be any good, hence why I'm after some recommendations for some better ones. I'm torn between EBC red stuff, Ferrodo DS2500's and performance friction Z. So many conflicting reviews

It isn't just about stopping power though. Feel and fade resistance are just as important and these factors can vary massively between pad manufacturers.

Personally thats a complete no brainer.

EBC..... personally wouldnt touch an ebc product with a barge pole again.

DS2500's are good.

But, the PF pads are excelent and not much more money!

I use my PFz's on road and hard on track and they just dont wear anywhere near as quickly as its competitors! On the road from cold they have great bite.... no downsides at all.

No I don't rate the EBC redstuff , I like the Blues and Orange , I have the orange in my GTR and find them good on the road , thats with 600hp.

The DS2500's are good , but so expensive now , we can supply front and rear PF Z rated pads front and rear for the price of DS2500 fronts alone !

Cheers Ian

Agree with the advice to steer clear of EBC. I know they claim to be making better pads, but they tried to sell ****e before, so I don't see why it will be any different today.

Pagid are probably one of the best brands you can go for. I don't know what specs are current though.

Car only running a tad over standard, 240bhp. General road use, no track days. Good initial bite would be good.

If you can put up with maybe some low speed squeal , the CL RC5+ take some beating , very good from cold and just get better with heat , not bad for dust and well priced

It's track days that asks a lot from pads , as my last post above you won't go far wrong fitting RC5 + pads , very good hot and cold , can offer 294mm grooved discs and RC5+ pads for £199.50 plus £15 P&P
Cheers Ian

depends on how aggressive you are brake wise, but the likes of Pagis RS series, PFC 01/08 or Mintex F4R will all be less aggressive on disc wear as well as being "nicer" pedal feel IMO

also bear in mind to consider the rear of the car as without a decent level of assistance from the rears you will potentially overload / over-heat the front set-up anyhows

I disagree Al , I found the F4R very hard on discs as they were in the Golf rally car I bought and chewed through the discs in no time , the RC5+ we have found to be very easy on discs , nothing like the RC6 and 8's
My son has the RC5+ pads in his supercharged Civic and anyone who was at rally day this year would have seen it on the track overtaking just about everything , it gets driven hard !

There was zero fade , done a few track days in it now , as well as some road mileage and there is no noticeable wear on the discs , and the wheels are very easy to clean off

Pagids are good , but expensive , haven't tried the PF08's yet
