A tip for anyone who is experiencing brake squeak when NOT braking!
I thought I had better write this incase anybody experiences the irritation I've had for the last year! Please note this DOES include a solution, thought it best to mention since I've read probably somewhere around 100 posts or more on this where a solution is never found.
Basically since about 2 weeks after I bought my Impreza, the front offside brake would squeak with a rotational sound, but this stopped when applying the brakes. This squeak was the most annoying thing and could be heard over the stereo, it made the first year of ownership un-enjoyable.
In an attempt to get rid of it (bare in mind some of these things might not make sense but I was desparate) I changed the brakes pads 5 times, I changed the brake discs 3 times, changes the calliper on the culprit wheel, changed the brake hose, changed the wheel bearing, replaced the inner CV boot, changed the outer CV boot 3 times (lots of stones in my area I guess kept ripping these) changed the drop links, changed the brake fluid regularly.. you get the idea I just kept throwing money at this to no avail. I have a fair bit of experience myself and I sought the advise of many other very experienced mechanics including Subaru 'specialists' but everyone was completely stumped by this.
In the end, before almost deciding to spend a grand on a big brake conversion for the front, I decided to try one last thing and take out the 'anti-squeal' shims behind the pads and I also swapped the (then week old pads) from offside to nearside.
Here I am a month later and the squeak has never even slightly appeared, an I can finally enjoy driving the car!
So to anyone with the same problem, give this a go, FOR FREE, before spending so much money like I did.

Yes this was done, even different brands of copper grease were tried out of desperation! But yes I'm just so glad to finally be enjoying the car!
