Front 2 balding in a band around outside edge - Supatyres quoting £130 each for S02 - seem a bit expensive but they are local and I am concerned that if Plod pulls me I might be in for the £K per corner fine someone told me about.

Can anyone get a better price than that ?

215/40 16" Toyo Proxy T1-S are just £52.70 at http://www.mytyres.net.

Not sure you should be running 205/40 16" because this makes the car's speedo read 6.7% too fast (i.e. displays 60 when you're only doing 56). The ones above bring this down to 5.4%. See http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html. You need 255's if you don't want to screw up the speedo reading.

Can anyone tell me if the extra 10mm width is OK with the 16" wheel size because I may just purchase some of these despite the speedo misreading (over reading may be good for me, lol!). Ran almost similar misreading tyres on my 220 coupe turbo without any issues except it read >70mph in 2nd and >100mph in 3rd. Won't tell you what speed in 5th because it was big. Obviously misreading though. Also, does the lower profile improve handling and grip at the expense of ride quality that much.
