Lots of fun (???) with my rear brakes....
Finally got round to ordering some new rear discs and pads from Ian at Godspeed to replace the second hand discs I got with the rear Brembo conversion I bought off ebay about three years back. The discs had corroded badly on the inside, and the new pads I fitted then were shot.
At the same time, I went back to the standard sized handbrake shoes and fitted Ian's grooved discs with an insert for the smaller shoes.
So....me and Andy (Chocolate O'Brian) started the job. First problem was not having either an Allen key long enough, or anything long enough that would turn my 3/8 drive 8mm Allen key socket, so a 3/8 breaker bar was purchased...£20, ker-ching.
Unfortunately, as Brembos do, one of the threads bound up on both sides, so the calipers had to come off and be sent to Ian for stainless helicoils fitted..more ker-ching.
Ian did a great job and got them back to me quickly, which was great as it's in for MoT tomorrow. He also removed all four bleed nipples and fitted new ones.
While they were away, I rebuilt the rear handbrake parts and fitted the new discs in place.
The calipers came back today, so Andy came round again. Refitting was easy, just as it should be, but we had to bleed the rears twice to get it done.
All done now, what a relief, in time for going for it's MoT tomorrow.
Question, though: why don't Brembo make their calipers with stainless inserts, or helicoils from new? This isn't rare, and Brembos are supposedly top German engineering...:rolleyes;
I know the same thing happens on the front Brakes on Ibiza Cupras, and they are AP.
If it's a known problem, why is it up to the end user to rectify it?
Just the brake fluid that leaked onto the garage apron to clean up now. It has braided hoses, so I couldn't clamp them, and even with rubber-glove fingers over them, held in place with zip ties, it managed to leak away all the fluid.
Oh well, fluid change is good too.
