Default Whirring noise at higher speeds (probably not a bearing)

Recently on my way back from Manchester I noticed I was getting a noise from the driver's side front, almost like a bearing starting to go, when I went above 60-70mph. Braking made the noise stop.

I pulled over at a services and pushed the pads away from the disc with a screwdriver to see if anything had caught in between the disc and pad.
I found the driver's side disc was much hotter than the passenger side, almost like the pad had been in constant contact with the disc.
However, after prising the pads away the car was fine on the drive home.

It's since repeated this yesterday on the way to PH Sunday Service, prompting me to wonder if I might have a sticky caliper - I'm running the K-Sport 8 pot 330mm kit.

My rotors are nearing time for a replacement set (not much of the groove on the disc left and they're about 3 1/2 years old) so is it likely this could be the cause, or is there something else I should also check?

Will probably whip the pads out and check them anyway, but any other ideas?

Thanks
