Question

Has anyone had a prodrive 294mm front disk upgrade? if so is it worth doing or is it better to go for the prodrive 330mm brake convertion. This might sound stupid but what is the difference between the two apart fom the obvious high cost?

Lightbulb

We removed a set of (4 pot) Alcons from a customers car last week and replaced them with a Scooby Mania/AP Racing 6 pot kit. I weighed all items for comparison and despite having 50% more pistons, the AP's were over 3lb/s per corner lighter.

Hi Juliano. The 294mm disc upgrade is just a high quality replacement for the standard item, made by Alcon. Fits under 16in wheels. £329 RRP, from Subaru dealers. Good. Much better than standard discs which are too easy to warp.

The 330mm Prodrive upgrade is serious Alcon kit, and requires 17in wheels. Includes alloy calipers and pads. £1,527. These are top drawer brakes, but have integral iron bells which makes them heavy and more prone to warping if you're into track days. There are better/cheaper alternatives.

Hang around here and you'll read all sorts of stuff about which brakes are best. There is a lot of good kit about but the thing which most distinguishes high-performance brakes is an alloy bell on the disc - lighter and virtually eliminates warping. Pads obviously make a lot of difference. Plenty of choice, here - depends on the sort of driving you do. Good brands are Ferodo, Mintex and Pagid.

One of the best value upgrades is made by Godspeed which fits alloy-belled discs to your standard calipers, plus your choice of pads. For 16in or 17in wheels. Prices similar to the Prodrive 294mm discs.

Good luck,

Richard.
