Question

Hi All,

Couple of brake questions for you all.

I need some new standard brake discs for my Impreza 1997 Catalunya. Had a quote for Discs from a main dealer at £95 + VAT for just one disc.
Is there any alternatives to paying this ?? Any other good companies ??

Also on removing the pads for the front and rear. There is a metal cover or shim which goes on the piston side of the pads. Are these important ?? on my car they have rusted and almost falling apart. Can you do away with these ?? Does it affect the braking if not fitted with the pads ??

Cheers

Gary

Try http://www.tas.uk.com/index.asp (not the best website give 'em a call). I bought a pair of Bremsport Group N discs from them for £107 including VAT & carriage. This was for a MY00, the discs on your car are smaller and so probably even cheaper.

I've just had new pads and discarded the pad backing plates (rusted). The car still stops so I guess you don't need 'em.

Cheers,

Ian.

The backing plates on the pads are anti squeal shims, on mine there's a plastic one and a metal one.

Cool

I've recently fitted new discs and pads all round from www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk.
They are single piece discs which are grooved. Pads are Mintex 1144 on the front (4 pots) and standard kevlar on the back. Cost was £400 for the lot.
I would highly recommend them.

I had a set of EBC grooved discs for £120 (for the pair). Along with EBC green soft compound pads for £45. All From Demon Tweeks. Work great, no brake dust, and cheaper! plus they wear the disc less so the discs last longer too!

I do believe EBC do solid discs instead, as the grooved disc can whine under heavy braking and they make a faint clicking noise under light braking.

The metal plates (anti-squeel shims) are'nt really needed, some non-OEM pads don't have the fittings for them. Keep them just in-case though.
