Default Upgrading brake setup on Classic Impreza Jap Import

Hi folks, I've decided to upgrade the brake setup on my imported Japanese STi V2. The factory setup is the rather weak 2-pot front and single-pot rear brakes with both axles using ventilated discs.

I have acquired a pair of 4-pot front calipers from the Hawkeye WRX and was now looking for a decent rotor + brake pad combination, mostly for street driving, but I do plan for 2-5 track days later this year. It seems the 2-piece floated and dimpled dics by Performance Friction are one of the best on the market. They are much larger however than the stock discs, which are 295 mm in diameter. The PFs are well over 300 mm wide. My question is, what is the largest and thickest disc that can be used on the 4-pot red calipers?

Here's an image of the PF rotor:

Contact Godspeed.

not only does he do his own version of the above, which is as good, IMHO, but he also does a kit to transform the stock calipers to be able to fit larger discs.

Might be on his website.

Hi koalorka,

I think the discs you’re looking at would be our 326mm discs as fits 2001 on STi’s, sorry we don’t make a bigger brake kit for your calipers and I don’t know what size discs they will take but let me know if you would like a quote on a set of these discs we’re offering 10% off to ScoobyNet members.

Regards,
Charlie

HI
If you fit the Gold STi brembo front calipers you can fit the PF discs in your link , assuming you have at least 17" wheels , the WRX calipers won't fit on the Sti discs.

It would really depend on your budget , you can fit grooved discs and good pads that would work very well for your use , but even with the best pads you would be at the limit on track with the Subaru 4 pots if you drive very hard.

I could supply you our grooved 294mm discs and Orangestuff pads for £199 which would be a very good standard size set up.

If you are running at least 17" wheels , I make a 335mm x 32mm 2 piece grooved disc set up , along with larger than standard pads , fitting kit and mounting brackets to fit with your WRX calipers , these are the best brakes you can fit with those calipers , period !
But the kit isn't cheap , we sell this kit for £550 , but its around half the price of buying a complete kit with calipers , and would be comparable to anything size for size.

See here for further details

Something else worth looking at if your going to track it , would be to fit the later 2001 onwards WRX rear brakes , you have 266mm and one pot calipers as standard , and with the fitting kit I designed you can bolt on the 290mm discs and 2 pot calipers , this will make the car brake flatter rather than nose dive so much , and will stop overworking the front brakes , you should be able to convert the rears for less than £300

Hope this helps
Cheers Ian

Default 293mm PF Discs

Just to let you know we also produce a 293mm disc that fits the WRX Non-Brembo 4 Pot Caliper.

This comes as a slotted disc as used in motorsport applications with improved bite and debris clearing.

That's exactly what am I looking for!

The brake setup with the red 4-pot calipers is also used on the USDM 2006-2007 standard WRX. And you have a pair for floating performance rotors listed for these cars (under 02-08 WRX in your sports catalog), model numbers:

326.053.87
326.053.88

Are these the same rotors you have in your picture? Can you confirm the sizing and model numbers?

The 4-pot front brake factory setup uses a 293-295 mm diameter ventilated rotor with a 23 mm min. thickness.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your exhaustive input, but I have already invested in a set of Subaru 4-pot calipers and simply want the best performance out of them. I understand that the biggest limitation of the 4-pots is their poor heat shedding capability, being cast steel. Would some kind of ducting solution have any significant impact on their cooling abilities?

I will be using a bigger, 17" alloy wheel so your larger disc upgrade kit is a viable solution, I will look into it. Great advice on the rear as well, thus far I have simply refurbished the wimpy single-cylinder pistons and used a new slotted rotor with a set of Redstuff pads. I will see how it performs this spring and proceed with upgrades where needed.

These are dimpled 326mm diameter discs with 30mm thickness to fit STi’s from 2001 onwards with brembo callipers.
I think these may be the discs in your photo.

293.057.67
293.057.68
Slotted 293mm diameter disc with 25mm thickness to fit non brembo WRX from 1999 to 2001

This is not the exact disc in the photo I posted but it does have the same slotted disc face pattern and V2 mounting hat.

293x24 mm up front and should be a 266x18 mm in the back.

The rear discs on a Type R are 290mm not 266mm
