Bought a used set of new age alloys of a sn member to go on my classic STi wagon, so along with a set of used GSD3's which I had fitted today went out test driving, as one does.

Driving down a favorite bit of twisty I opened her up, had a couple of seconds warning and then...







So my question is - WTF's gone wrong?

 

presumably its previously had an accident impact and has eventually stressed the spokes enough to part company.................

Powder coated ? Some people burn the old paint off.

Aluminium needs careful treatment if subject to heating, such as welding on melting plastic onto it.

Two club members had this happen, BUT you have been unlucky as STD. Subaru alloys are pretty tough, ( heavy ), it's cheap alloys that usually fail.

P.S. Take it you and the car are mostly O.K. ?

 

Literally fitted them 3 hours and 10 miles earlier... yes, powder coated but no visual signs of damage anywhere.

wing has been damaged. Wheel and tyre have bent the edge of it. And as it took 1/3 mile to stop (wasn't doing any more than the prescribed 60mph limit...) the brake disc has been damaged as has the bottom suspension arm

 

That's scary ..

 

The wheels seemed extremely lightweight compared to one or two others I've picked up. Namely 17" Rota GRA's. Is it just because the Rota's are a 'budget' wheel the seemed more than twice the weight? Or the weight of the broken one has anything to do with the breakage, I don't know?

Anything could have happened at that high speed (but not more than the limit)

I'm still shocked and unsure of what to say. Just glad that your ok.

Obviously I wouldn't have sold you the wheels if I thought there was any damage to them, and wouldn't have taken the 4hr drive to drop them off personally.

Reading some of the things above, I certainly won't be getting wheels powder coating any more.

Dunx - in one of the links above you said that you know of a powder coaters where a few people have had problems ( or something like ). Please can you confirm where it is? Pm if you like.

I had these done about 4 mile from the airport, but in Bradford.

i have seen 2 cases now where the standard wrx wheels have had significant cracks in the spokes , these were non powdercoated wheels on daily driven cars 1 completely standard the customer was shocked to see them when i showed him

 

Jesus H. Christ, I won't be going anywhere NEAR powder coaters premises with ANYTHING alloy after reading this thread (and associated links).

Scary, yep, very.

But at least the OP walked away, and the car will repair, THAT'S what's important.

 

like everything done correctly by a competent company you would have no issue......
