Default The importance of Shims??

The 2 sets of shims that are fitted to each brake pad, 1 large and 1 small triangle shapped one, how important is the large shim on the rear pad?. As have just got round to fitting the last pad on my wrx sti, but in cleaning up the existing large shim a bit snapped of, the thin bit near one of the guide holes, because of this I cant really use this shim anymore as it may move out of place as the guide pin in the calliper won't hold it into place. So I have just used the smaller triangle shaped shim on just this one pad, all other pads have both sets of shims on. Is this perfectly fine not to have the larger shim installed, it wont effect the brakes in anyway will it?, as I was under the understanding shims were just used to stop brake squeal?
