Unhappy

After three weeks of waiting my disc's and pads finally arrived.. Looking forward to getting out on the open road tonight as the car has been off the road since Bedford trackday..

After my friend (who is fitting them) read the fitting instructions I found out I need 14mm by 2 TAP (WTF).

I have tried everywhere to get one, Halfords, Wickes, B&Q, Homebase then about 4 car shops and no one has one that size!!! 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm seem to be the norm but 14mm by 2 !!!!!!!!! No chance......

So if anyone has one or if any of you guys that have fitted your own Godspeed brakes from the group buy has one, any chance I could borrow it and I will send it back to you.. I need this here by Wednesday morning as I have someone coming (AGAIN) to fit the bloody things.

Please mail me asap

mkhan@bbagroup.com (tomorrow)
mkhan_home@btinternet.com (tonight)

Thanks in advance..

Mark

I borrowed one from work and so can't help. They are a 'non-standard' size and to get one you'll have to go to a proper tool or fasteners shop.

Ian,

You are correct that it is a standard thread size to BS 3643, but is a non-prefered size. most designers would choose either M12 or M16. However I realise that your kit uses a M14 tapped hole so that the original bolts can be re-used if required.

Ian/anyone,
What exactly do you need to tap out?
Any other suprises I should expect when I get my kit? (apart from the size of the discs)

Cheers,
Iain.

Iain,
the 2 holes (per side) that need tapping are the ones that the caliper is originally bolted to ( with 12mm bolts),this happens to be the tapping size for the 14mm bolts that secure the caliper spacing bracket in place, the caliper then bolts on to the caliper spacing bracket.

hope this helps

I found a local engineering merchant shop approx £15-20 in Newbury - It was difficult but they are out there!

So if I understand this right (and it has been known!!)

I will need to replace the old bolts with new ones(which I take come in the kit) and tap out the original mounting holes.

But then I cannot put the original disks back on when I come to sell the car!!!!!Or I'll have to find some bolts to fit

PGMabley,
Any chance I could borrow your tap? I'll be fitting them at my parents place in Wokingham. (when I get the them)

Iain,
you can put the original set up back on at a later date, the original bolts screw into the caliper not the tapped (new)holes the core size is still 12mm so no problems,as long as you keep you original bolts where you can find them!!

Question

Surely the original 12mm bolts will still be needed to attach the calipers to the spacing bracket, then the 14mm bolts for bracket to hub?
Still can't get my head around 12mm bolts being able to go into 14mm holes?
Anyone explain it please?

Nick,
the original mounting holes are 12mm diameter clearance (not tapped)so the bolts in the original set up slide thru the holes and screw into the caliper.

the mounting holes are then tapped (threaded) to M14, the spacer block (with 14mm clearance hole) is then bolted to the now tapped holes. there are 2 new bolts (12mm) supplied to then bolt the caliper to the new spacer bracket.

if you then want to go back to the original setup you just use the original bolts which still slide thru the now 14 mm tapped holes(the core of 14mm thread is 12mm).And bolt to the caliper as before.

hope this helps.
