Grinding 4th gear on P1
#1
If I change up to fourth gear under power, I get a really nasty crunch - very often going from 2nd to 4th. My dealer "could not reproduce the problem", and said that it was probably due to "clutch drag". I said, no, the synchromesh is dying, and you need to rebuild my gearbox under warranty on this £32k car designed for racing. He told me to get lost.
Anyone know a sympathetic dealer out there?

Had the same problem with my P1, various gears, and 3 rebuilds. I have done mainly mtorway miles in the car, so it gets very little hard use.
Suggest you ring IM Customer Services. Presumably the car didn't used to do it, and shouldn't do it.
A clear claim in my book.

My P1 is back into my dealer again tomorrow to have a new gearbox fitted.
My dealer has had the gearbox out 3 times & replaced various bits inside it on each occasion to try a cure a problem with 2nd gear but to no avail.
The problem with 2nd gear was that it made a noise like a bearing was on the way out!
My P1 is used much the same as Russell's - mainly motorway miles.
Finally IM agreed to replace the gearbox – I feel however, that they should have done this in the first place and saved themselves some labour charges.
Having said that, my dealer did all the telephoning to IM to get a new gearbox out of them.
Only what a dealer should be doing for its customers anyway.
So give IM customer services a call – after all you are driving what is supposed to be/was their flagship!!!!
And don’t use that dealer anymore.
Let us know how you get on.
Cheers,
Rob
