Help! Pics of my tyre. Is it safe?
Well technically not my tyre but my father in laws tyre.
He is meant to be driving down south in a few days (300 miles) but has just noticed a slash running from side to side. The slash doesn't seem to be deeper than the tread depth so it is actually ok?
If you compare the slash to the thread depth then all that seems to be different is the fact that the slash is a lot thinner but essentially just an addition to the pattern. On the other hand it isnt a clean cut like the tread pattern so not sure if it would be susceptible to tearing under braking.
I know that with tyres it is always good to play safe but Im just wondering if this is something to worry about. What do you think?
Sorry about the rubbish pictures. only had my phone at the time.

I dont think its down to the cords but may not be too far off. My only concern is whether driving will accelerate the tear and soon become dangerous. I dont know if a tyres rubber is designed to cope with tears without them developing or if they acts a bit like cotton, one small tear and it will soon become a large one.

Its a front wheel C max so he would only buy the one. Im just trying to find out from more knowledgable people than me whether it is indeed a risk.

Im with you to be honest. If it was my car I would be changing it. My father in law is much more hesitant, but then again he has just bought another tyre, had a weekend holiday last weekend and is going to Spain next week and is feeling the pinch.

I wouldn't drive any distance with a tyre like that, it's not safe in my opinion.
For the cost of a tyre, it's a no brainer really. Safety first.

I saw it today. It was actually a Falken tyre which arent too bad, he just pronounced the name over the phone as far-ler-keren which was why I thought he had some random piece of rubber on from somewhere far far away. Still I would much preferred to have had some Vreddys but there you go.
