When I done my brakes I upgraded to dot 5.1. I think dot 4 is the minimum you should put in, but says dot 3 on the cap but got recommended never to put that in.

Since I changed all the fluid I bled all brakes but only used just under a litre of fluid so doesn't take much.

Yes you can mix road fluid , its better to put in what's already in though.

If your fitting new brakes , as you have to push the pistons back into the calipers you will see that the reservoir will fill back up , if it has been topped up already it might overflow and drip fluid on your paint which can damage the paint , so just watch out for that.

While your changing the brakes , it would be worthwhile to flush the system with new fluid , just bleed the old fluid out and put a good quality dot 4 , or better still dot 5.1

Cheers Ian
