Default Pad positioning question for all you big brake kit people!

I just fitted my K-Sports and on the front the pads don't make contactwith the whole of the disc surface, there is about a 2/3 MM gap, i can't lower the caliper either to correct this.

On the rears there is a gap of about 2/3 MM top and bottom.

Is this the same on your K-Sports or Brembos etc...

Thanks

This is the only photograph i have to try explain it, but see the grooves on the disc, the brake pads on the rear only makes contact with the length of the grooves, just over on each side to be accurate, leaving a possible 2/3 MM unused brake surface at the top and bottom.

On the front the pads cover the grooves again but leave about 2/3 MM at the bottom of the grooves, the pads cover the top fine to the edge.

There isn't anything i can do about it as i can't lower the caliper but you would think that the pad would touch all the disc surface, and i just wanted to know if this is the same for other people.

Thanks

The edges get all (c)rusty and horrible, in time...

Better not using them for braking...

I've not seen this problem before. It looks as though the pads you are using are taken from another application and probably made to 'best fit' this application to keep the cost down perhaps. Any of the Brembos, APs, Hi-Specs and Alcons I've fitted all have perfect pad shape to disc contact. However I wouldn't worry too much about the overlap, it just won't wear that bit out!

And anyway, (I can't remember the figure exactly), but something like 75% of your friction from the pad is produced by the leading edge. Serious competition brake setups usually have four or six individual pads in the caliper, to double or triple the efficiency of the leading edge on the pads.

If it was me I'd give K-Sport a ring and check the pads are correct for the application and that the clearance issues you have are something that was engineered that way.

The various pad manufacturers vary their compound position and dimensions slightly even with supposedly identical pad fitments which leads to slight variations in rotor coverage. Its not a problem.
