Default Wheels and winter tyres

I have recently become a scooby owner again with a 2001 WRX wagon. I am looking to get some wheels and winter tyres for it. I bought it with 18" wheels with 225x40s.

I have had very good experience with Avon winter tyres and they do 205x55R16s which are a sensible price and very close to the rolling radius of the standard 215x45R17s that would have been on the car from new. The question is are there any suitable (ie inexpensive, correct pcd and offset) 16" rims, steel or alloy that I can get?

Or anyone got ideas on a suitable winter tyre setup?

Thanks
Graham

would a set of classic alloys fit as you would pick some of those up cheap. I am toying with this idea on mine but need to find a cheap set of my05 sti alloys then will probably get some part worn winter tyres while they are still around

Aren't winter tyres are a waste of time. Just get a good set of tyres and use them for all road driving? Am i missing something?

Thanks

That could be interesting. What size are the tyres on there at the moment?
Thanks

id need to check but I think 195 60 15. so radially not a lot different to the 17" wheels that would have been on it from new.

Winter tyres are designed to work best at temperatures below 7 degrees C, they have a different compound of rubber and different construction to enable them to work better when it in cold, damp, wet, frost, snow, slush etc, just the kind of weather we get in the winter.

I suspect even the cheapest winter tyre will work better in the winter than the best most expensive summer tyre.

Winter tyres are not a waste of time, alot of the countries in Europe and Scandinavia have made it law to use winter tyres.

If the UK was as serious about road safety as they say are they would implement this here too, how many accidents over the winter months would be avoided if winter tyres were used here?

I run my standard STi 17" alloys with Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2, and they are fantastic in the snow.

I lived in Germany for over seven tears. They use winter tyres. But it does get colder over there. its six and two threes.
