Default Winter Tyres

Hi

My tyres are nearing the end of there life and since were coming into our 6 months of winter I was considering winter tyres, believe it or not its been SNOWING in Aberdeen today !

Anyway, what are these tyres like when its not snowing/wet ? are they still decent enough when its a dry day or does this ruin them ?

Anyone else using them ?

Thanks

Winter tyres are designed to work at their best below 7 Deg C.

In frost, slush, cold and wet weather plus of course snow any winter tyre will be better than any summer tyre.

I have just recently got a set of Nokians for my classic, and I'm interested in how they work out.

Winter tyres are amazing in poor conditions. If you have never used them on snow/slush/ice before you will be staggered at the difference they make compared to normal "summer" tyres, especially worn ones!

I bought a set for my Impreza 6 years ago, and they have been one of the best purchases made. I do about 3 - 4000 miles on them every winter. I went for Micheln Alpin tyres (from Costco), which although not the absolute best in snow and ice, still give reasonable performance when the roads are near normal. You'll find a big difference even when driving on wet roads when it's cold, especially ones with a poor road surface.

Yes there is a bit more body roll, and spongyness when going round corners. They wil also understeer readily on warm dry roads coming out of roundabouts, but after a week or so you soon adapt to a much smoother driving style.

Even a cheaper winter tyre is going to be many times better than a good summer tyre in wintry conditions, though might not be as good in dry conditions as a better make of winter tyre.

My viewpoint was that the cost of the tyres when new was less than the excess on my insurance policy if I went off the road during the winter, and they have paid for themselves several times over!

I normally fit mine around mid to late November, and then take them off again mid March.

^ Thanks for that

My current tyres have a few miles left in them so should be able to make them last until the bad weather really sets in
