Default Handbrake binding

I've just noticed that I sometimes get a squeak from the rear as I pull away after releasing the hanbrake. It only lasts a second or two and doesn't return while driving.
I've never touched the handbrake mechanism on the car. It is a dealer serviced MY00 with about 65k on the clock. I use the car daily so don't want to have to pull it apart then have to wait for a few days while I get hold of parts.
Any ideas what I am likely to need? Is this sort of thing normally a case of cleaning and lubrication or are there parts that almost always need replacing?

Thanks for any help.
Simon

Could need cleaning and greasing.

As to whether to DIY, that depends on how much confidence you have and how much time. You'll need half a day.
