Default Quick brake question

After some spirited driving recently my front brakes squeak rather loudly when breaking lightly. Under moderate to heavy breaking there is no noise. Breaking performance has not changed. Have I just cooked the pads (I did get a wonderful smell of very hot brakes) and would replacing them solve this? If yes how easy is it to swap the pads over? The disks look OK to me.

The car is a 2006 WRX with standard brakes.

Thanks!

perhaps put some copper slip on the back of the pads & check the shims and retaining spring is still inplace.

changing the pads is dead easy.
