Default Preasure on snow

One for the tyre experts :-

What is the lowest preasure I can run on 215/40/17 for improve traction on snow without damaging the tyres. I usually run 34 all round, Im thinkin 28??
And yes, I know I should have winter tyres.

TIA jonny.

AFAIK you should increase pressure (say 4 psi) to support tread and get a little more bite. Truth is that in these conditions I doubt you'd notice the difference, probably best to leave as is and go easy or stay at home.

Well i go snowboarding every year and i noticed and always been told when driving in snow lower pressure is best by far, problem is most us have lower profile tyres that big 4x4's so cant go too low without running flat and ruining tyres.

In theory lower pressure will increase tyre temp, which should be a good thing in these conditions. Provided you then don't go caning it down a dry motorway and v-max..

All theory and as said probably best to leave as is and sit it out at home lol..!

Lower pressure = less grip as greater surface area on snow, works great on sand though

lower pressure means more carcase flex to help clear blocked grooves.....

P.S. Pressure MUST be added once clear of incident, or on clear roads.

Well I've noticed an improvement, albeit slight, but the tread blocks are getting less snow clogged. Not been anywhere where I can feel safe much above 40mph, so 28psi will remain for the time/temperature being..lol..
