Default 17' v 18'

pros and cons for handling wise? iv always been under the impression 17' were better for some reason? is this true?

want another set of wide rims with stickier rubber so was thinking 17x9 and nice & lightweight but dont wana rule 18x9 out as i tink 18 is perfect for a classic

Only go bigger to fit over larger brakes, as they are almost guaranteed to weigh more (bad).

IMHO

people usually go for 17's for weight purposes by genral rule based on the mass of the wheel (with 2 things that are made of the same material, the larger one will genrally weigh more) BUT one thing you need to think about is, if you compare an average 17" wheel eg. dare, tsw, innovit and so on that make their wheels purely for the design against an 18" wheel from a company that makes wheels based on performance eg. oz, volk and so on (using better materials) the larger one will then be a better choice

a quick example

tsw rocket 5 7x17 i would take a guess at them weighing at least 12 kgs per wheel

oz ultraleggera 8x18 weighs 8.2 kgs per wheel

even though the oz wheels are larger with the set fitted to your car you would have saved about 15 kgs in weight, increasing handling, although only slighty some people go to the extremes of striping wiring from a car to save weight to get down the strip quicker

every little counts

I've not noticed any significant difference in handling going to 18s on my Newage WRX but I went from std WRX wheels to Prodrive PFF7s so gained an inch in width as well (both sets on Toyos).

If anything I'd say the 18's handle better and they were definately lighter than the 17s.
