2008 Impreza STI Brake Grinding Noise
Hi,
Just bought the 08 Impreza STI used from a Subaru dealer with 7000 miles on the clock.
When the brakes have warmed up and I apply the brakes, upon coming near to a dead stop I hear this loud grinding/screeching noise just from the front passenger side wheel.
Pads are the standard pads aswell are the discs. Pads have loads of meat left on them.
I have taken it to Subaru for warranty however they are not sure what the problem is, apparently the 08 sti's pads can make a noise and so they are sort of covering themselves saying its not a warranty issue as they function ok but this is not just a faint noise, it's really loud, does not sound one bit healthy and feel vibration through the brake pedal.
Anyone with any suggestions as to what it could be?

Have you been driving it very hard in which case this may be pad deposits on the discs and will wear off with normal driving. Look for smeared appearance on disc face.

Not been driving it hard, only driven it about 100 miles since I bought it. The discs look totally normal.
The noise only happens when theres some heat in the system from 'stop/go' traffic and is only heard when braking from about 15mph to 0mph, just on the front left side.

Yes, sounds like it needs taking apart and given a good clean. Get all the dust out with an old toothbrush and then copper grease the edges and back of the pads. You might find the pads jammed in with dust which could well explain your probs. The Brembos are susceptible to getting jammed with dust, when I had some I used to dismantle and clean every 6 months.

on my 06 i had a similair problem, on removing the pad there was a very slight uneven edge, as if it had been manufactured a bit dodgy. it was very, very slight however, nearly un-noticeable. just grinded it off so it was then even contact throughout the disc and it worked a treat. as you said there was no disc damage visible but it almost sounds like something is "caught" between the pad and the disc. worth a look. all the best, hope you get it sorted, lee.
