Default Brake shims

Are they needed?

I've just pulled all my brakes off all round and have come away with 6 shims!

The strangest part is that they were only on the front brakes, none on the rear!

Anyway. Are they totally necessary? Are they only there to even out the pressure across the whole brake pad?

I removed mine when I fitted Greenstuff pads as they recommended removal. Cut a long story short the pads were rubbish so I fitted some Predator pads again without the shims and I have had no problems. All in all they have been off my classic for around 3 years.

Shims are there to reduce noise so can be left out if you're not bothered about that. I think the pedal feel is better without.
