Catflap , Our web site is www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk , it does need updating but it gives you an idea of what we make and the products themselves , we can be contacted on email or by phone - 01656 660899 , many here have our kits fitted so it's best to ask them how our brakes are . Cheers , Ian

Question

Hi all!
well i replied to a mintex 1155 thread a few days ago and said i was having no problems with 1155's on standard discs.
2000 or so miles later im noticing hairline fractures on the discs, like crazing on them.

I was looking at fitting some blackdiamonds, who's running them on here and which ones to go for? cross drilled? or just grooved?
has anyone had any problems running these in conjunction with 1155's? mine has four pot calipers MY00.

any advice appreciated as its going in for a service on monday and will have them fit then.

Lee, Mintex 1155 pads are quite capable of cracking standard discs, but from what you've said this doesn't appear to be a problem for your application/use.

Discs give several warning signs before actually cracking. The first is surface crazing, which tells you that you're getting plenty of heat into the surfaces. Crazing varies from virtually invisible to alarmingly visible. But so long as it stays that way, you should be okay. The discs will probably wear out or warp before cracking.

Next sign is warping, and you can't miss the symptoms. Only cure is new discs. Fit new, before the discs crack, which is obviously dangerous.

If you ignore the steering wheel wobbles of warping (not easy, as you can hardly hold on to the wheel when it gets bad) then the discs will crack. With a cracked disc, it is physically broken and you can see daylight through the metal. Nasty.

Hope this helps.

Richard.

Cheers Richard!
Methinks i got surface crazing, no cracks as yet or warping, but im doing a trackday in 5 weeks and ive lost confidence in the oem discs.
Ive had other performance cars but never noticed crazing before? surely i wouldnt get that with the black diamonds? as its about 100 miles on track and would hate the oem's to give up the ghost when full on the brakes, im having braided hoses put on too so that might increase more stress on the oem's?

Lee, you never mentioned track days

Where are you going? Unless it's somewhere like Snetterton, where you only use the brakes a few times a lap and there are plenty of long straights to cool them down, you will bu99er the standard discs for sure. If it's Dono, they'll be dead before you've even learnt the circuit. That place is a real brake killer. Other popular tracks like Knockhill or Oulton Park are not much better.

I don't know about Black Diamond, or who makes their discs (not certain, but I don't think they are a manufacturing company). I would go straight to Godspeed and get a pair of their discs, grooved only and with alloy bells. They will not warp, and they even give a 12 month guarantee on this, including track days. They have kits for 16in and 17in wheels, using the standard Subaru caliper. This is the best value brake up-grade you can get.

Braided hoses won't make the brakes any stronger, but should firm up the pedal. While you're at it, re-fill with 5.1 brake fluid or you might boil the standard juice - pedal goes straight to the floor - very entertaining Also take along a spare set of pads. Even the very best pads wear at an alarming rate when they get hot. Check the pads carefully (front and rear) after every session and don't assume that they're okay just because you've got pad left on the outside that you can see easily. Inner pads can wear differently (as I found out the expensive way) I think maybe because they run hotter when you're really on it.

Have fun

Richard.

Thumbs up

cheers Richard!
im already running dot 5 fluid, im going to croft in 5 weeks done it before but on totally standard set up, im also hoping to do donno and knockhill, so i should sort out the discs! whats sort of money are these discs from godspeed?
am i wasting my pennys on the braided hoses?
just thought it may help
i know a AP brake conversion would be good but i havent the extra to chuck at the car so ill stick to the 4 pots and try and make the best of em.

what other discs do you recommend?

I have absolutely no complaints about the uprated pads ds4003 and discs from TSL actually very good IMHO.
