Probably a Daft Question ...
... but here goes ...
Today I bought some Pads and Discs for the front of my old trusty MX5, yes - I know, I should have serviced my hairdryer at the same time!!
Anyway, I have replaced 100's of discs in my time as a car owner .... one of these discs has a chunk out of it.
This is not just any old chunk, it is a machined chunk .... like a flat across at a tangent of about 150mm milled out of the vent vanes. I only spotted the thing when I had assembled everything!!
However, this is the question:-
Could discs ever have a chunk milled out to balance them? Maybe it was way out and they removed some metal?
Personally, I have never, ever seen it .... but I cannot imagine how it passed inspection!?
Cheers, and don't laugh!!

Very much like in this photo, kindly found by Mart360 - thanks to him.
In my case it is a far more agressive milling which goes some way into the vanes.

Anyone any idea at all what it is for/is it anything to worry about/reason for return?
The other disc has nothing like this.

Must be deliberate for balancing. Pic you posted is quite normal. If what you have has a lot more taken out of it I would be concerned why it was so far out of balance in the first place, may be a casting problem with a hidden defect which may come to light as a disc distortion at a later date. Think I'd insist on a replacement before you fit.

Thanks D1CCY .... I have already fitted it - didn't notice it actually even though it is a deep cut (in a bit of a hurry to beat the light) it was as I was cleaning the assembly marks off them that I saw it - not exactly happy with it, even if it is for balancing. The cut goes into the top of the vanes .... that cannot be good AFAIK.
I'll have a word with the Factors, I've been using them for 27 years they should have a sympathetic ear I would have thought.

Obviously, I bought two ..... the other one has no cuts whatsoever (as I would normally expect, and what I have seen in the past). It's new to me - but if it is a balancing act then maybe it's OK?

It's okay Pedro, as you only ever get up to 50 mph you should still be able to stop it when the disc shatters. Also as you managed to make a set of Scoob brake discs last however many tens of thousands of miles it was it suggests to me that you don't use them / have the need for them much
