Default Wagon brake upgrade - Recommendations for a punter

grooved disks
calipers
pads
4 pots

I'm a punter when it comes to the bits but i do know that the standard brakes on my wagon are sheeeit.

Looking to upgrade but have no idea what is best - my driving is general town driving but do enjoy a blast up the hills at the weekends. Have a trip planned with an Alpina D3 and a 350z coming up soon and would like some chance of not being left to far behind them.

I'm planning suspension then remap at some point too.

Any advice would be sick.

cheers

slax

We'll need quite a bit more info before we can comment:
What model and MY?
What does it have now?
Size of wheels?
Thinking of new wheels?

Those wheels are 16".
How much are you looking to spend? Will you be changing wheels before the brake change?

Won't be changing the wheels before the brake change. Can I upgrade the brakes then do a wheel change at a later date?

Don't want to spend massive of amounts as in 1000's - middle of the road.

I take it I need disks, pads and calipers?

Waste of time just upgrading the pads?

A MY 00 car will almost certainly already have the Subaru 4-pot calipers.......check by looking to see if they have SUBARU in raised letters on them.

If so, they are 294mm discs IIRC, and the calipers are good enough to keep: many people UPGRADE older cars to just those calipers.

You can then buy better discs and pads to fit your existing calipers and the whole lot WILL go under your existing wheels.

At a later date, if you wish, there are kits available to fit larger discs to those calipers, but you DO need to go up to 17" wheels.

Try High Performance Brakes - Supplying AP and Brembo brake kits for road and motorsport use for advice on what's available now.

Ian, who owns Godspeed, is a top bloke, and if he doesn't know about brakes, no-one does
