To Slick or not to Slick....That is the question
Hi,
How advisable or not is it to run full slicks on a dry track with a pretty much stock sti?
ex wtcc slicks for a ton should give a decent increase in grip whilst i get the suspension sorted.
Is it advisable knowing the extra loads thats going to put on my brakes, steering etc etc?
Ive got std 4pots (classic so not brembos) with ds2500's and rbf600 fluid.
Curious of your opinions on this.
Chris

lol yeah quiet.
They can fit on 7" rims im told by the chap selling them. may have issues with the arches rubbing. but as its not yet dropped i might not.
Yeah i got 2.5 sets of road rubber to chew through at the moment, so i should probably wear those out first. Gonna need another set of 17"s tho.
Think the width of the tyres are 245? gonna be a stretch to fit them to 7" wheels.
Alternative is get some wider rims with spacers. again thats going to increase strain on every part. Not sure how bullet proof all these parts up for me to start uprating the grip?

240/610/17 is the size the chap has quoted. Whats the deal with the tyre profile? in mm intead of related to tyre width?
Do you rekon these would fit without spacers/arch rolling on 7" rims to a classic?
Im sure i saw some 220 clio Cup slicks forsale on here a few weeks back...?

ahaa ok good stuff.
I guess ill hold out for some clio cup slicks. (anyone know where i can get some?)
How do they perform warming up wise? With the power and capabilities of a scoob id imagine its not a problem trying to keep them warm/loosing temperature..?

ftz 24/61/17 thats the size on the tyre and they are fitted on 7.5 rim perfect i did have few cuts put in them just to help on damp days.i dont put slicks on cheap wheels i did this and had problems with the wheels flexing under load. That was on the "warm up" laps

Most tyres are able to be fitted to a range of rim widths.
The ideal for a 225 may be 7.5", but the narrowest will be 7", but the widest may be 8.5", so stretching a narrow tyre onto a wide rim is preferable.
Silly 172sport, fancy you and the WTCC & BTCC all being wrong
dunx

The general rule of thumb for wear and tear for trackdays is 10x- 100 miles on track will cause the same wear and tear as 1000 miles on the road.
If you run on slicks, go for about 30 to 40x; you will destroy gearboxes and diffs, bushes etc... and the limits will be raised so much that if you have a surplus of speed over skill it's going to hurt real bad.
A properly set-up Impreza on slicks is damn fast though; I've lapped Oulton with Gallardo and GT3 racers in a (heavily) track mod'd STi- but we did destroy two diffs and a gearbox.
It all depends on how you drive, and how your car's set up. If you have proper diffs and gearset you'll be fine- but they'll destroy a road car if you're a quick driver.
Another word of warning.... take your time warming them. Driving on slicks is very different to driving on road tyres.

Nice.
So what is the difference then in the drving? I would imagine a much quicker/sudden loss of grip. I think it might be worth a hundred quid to try. Im not a maniac track drive but i do my best. Decent mechanical sympathy i guess you could say.
Still torn between the two ideas. r888's just seem too much to chuck away when these are lying about!.
