I've heard of this and (provided the wheel is in good condition) a coat of paint inside the wheel well where it's covered by the tyre, will seal the casting. However, it could be the casting is starting to crack and the problem may not be visible. Have the wheel crack tested if possible or just replace it. The propect of a wheel breaking isn't pleasant.
