Default Goodyears or Vredesteins

Need to replace my tyres in the next month or so and have been trying to decide between the GY F1 asymetrics or the Vredestein Utrac sessanta's.

Replacing Khumo's which have worn well but have not been impressed with the grip or handling, particularly in the wet which is important due to living in Scotland!
What do people reccomend?

Just had the Ultrac Sessanta's just put on my classic WRX and they are incredible.

Having read the test in Evo, I am not sure the Goodyears are worth the extra money.

I would definitely buy the Vredesteins again

Just as a matter of interest, did you go from the Goodyear F1 or Asymmetric to the Sessanta's, or from another tyre?

i looked at the Goodyears, but decided on the Sessanta.

I had the Pirelli P-Zero Nero previously which were always a bit scary in the wet but pretty good in the dry.

The Vredesteins have great feel and turn in, they feel really sharp and dont tramline anywhere near as much as the Pirellis. In the wet the Ultracs are incredible, they feel like they have a much grip as in the dry (I know they dont lol).

The car suffers from much less understeer than previously and is much better all round.

One negative thing is that the Vredesteins are certainly noisier than the Pirellis, especially under load, i.e. cornering.

Ahh, I did wonder if you'd tried the Goodyear. I've had the GSD3 and now the Asymmetric, but not tried the Sessanta and am reluctant to try them having found such a great tyre with the F1s. So neither of us can really do a fair comparison

I went from the F1's to the Vredsteins..

Wouldn't go back to the Goodyears, and the Ultracs are wearing better !

Apart from the fact that they last half as long and are terrible in the wet

Have you tried sessantas or assymetrics in the wet? can you compare them with the paradas?

They cost half the amount so dose it not make up for it in the long run

And there great in the dry! Just slow down in the wet

They must be budget priced then i got 4 x 225/45/18 sessantas fitted and balanced for less than £380 and for that money no other tyre comes close IMO and ive had all the popular makes

Like NXG, I've recently gone from F1 GSD3s to F1 Asymmetrics (thanks for the advice, btw) and have been impressed so far (ca 400 miles). The GSD3s lasted about 22k miles and gave good fuel economy but had started to tramline badly and with winter coming I decided to replace them. I haven't had the Asymm's long enough to be able to give a full report, but they are even better in the wet and in greasy conditions (after road gritting) than the GSD3s, don't tramline at all (yet), and seem to be quieter.

In the light of the EVO report, it was a tough choice but in the end I decided to stick with rubber I knew (so to speak). If the consensus on here shifts to Vredsteins, I'd be tempted next time round.

I've had BOTH F1 Assymetrics AND Sessantas on my 2003 STI. They're both truly exceptional tyres. The Sessantas wore a little better and gave a slightly better ride quality/lower noise. The Assymetrics had marginally better turn in and steering feel. With either of these tyres, you won't go wrong I guarantee.

Currently running some Michelin Alpin Sport PA3s for winter. Not the handling of either of the two above - until the temperature dips near to freezing that is (frequent up here) and the road is wet/icy/snowy

Were the F1's the asymmetric's or gsd3's, out of interest..?

Just to add to the well deserved praise I've dished out for the F1a's over the last 10mts or so I've had them fitted. I'm very impressed with their ability to still perform as well in near freezing conditions..

The only tyre I've had that has been any good once the temps start to drop below 7c..!

I've put about 10k on mine and they don't look any different.

As I've always said, they do need ~500 miles to scrub in and start perform properly and make sure they're fresh stock (as with all tyres)..

Paid £100 per corner 225/40 18's BTW (last jan)..

Never had either on a scoob (only had bridgestones) but have had ultracs and GSD3's on my omega so sort of a comparison

Started off life with the ultracs, great tyre they had the grip, the feeling and great wet weather handling, but they wore quickly which was my only gripe, but the car was fantastic to drive with these on

Now after the ultracs had worn, decided to see what all the fuss was about with the goodyear GSD3's (reinforced), so i got some well acutally it should be more like because the comparison was not even close.
The car was more stodgy with the goodyears on (note that i also have the tracking done with a full new set of tyres and this was all set up properly), a bit too much flex in the sidewalls, even for the reinforced ones! after getting use to (sort of) the wallowy feel, the tyres felt good they had excellent dry weather grip and not too bad in the wet either but if i had the choice again it wouldnt have been the goodyears, i would pay that little extra (about 10 quid per tyre) and go get the vredesteins

Vredestein is a European tyre manufacturer, Ultrac is the sporty end of the range, and the Sessanta is the top model in the Ultrac range.

Vredestein

Had F1 GSD3's on my Bug WRX and now have F1 Asymetrics on my Hawk WRX. Both better the the RE050's I'd had, and a whole different league to the Pirelli crashamatics I had on my Bug. I nearly went for the Ultracs but chose the Goodyears as I'd had a good experience with the GSD3's.
