Default STD Disks & Pads? Brake Fluid? Caliper Refurb?

Hi,

This is 3 questions in one, however all brake related. ish.

1. How will standard Disks and Pads for a WRX STI stand up to track days? Will they cope enough or is it essential to upgrade to grooved? I suspect they will do, but may cook after about 20 min? Also i hear grooved helps deglaze the pads making the brakes bite faster once hooot. I think the disk on the v4 sti are 300mm disks, with 4 pot subaru calipers. Pads will be whatever was fitted by the Subaru Dealer on its last service.

2. Im going to change the hoses and refurb the calipers. So now would be a good time to upgrade the brake fluid. How will normal fresh brake fluid cope on the track? What brands/fluids should i fill it up with and where can i get them, and will it be a noticable improvement/worth the cost?

3. Original caliper colour for my car Red with white writing? Any particular brands of pain i should go for, dont want a negative effect on heat dissipation from the calipers. Any tips on refurbing them? I was gonna wirebrush on a drill, then get a pot of paint rather than a spray. Any more tips on getting a good effect? Any Guides/Pics before/after?

I look forward to your feedback

1: Don't know but i'm pretty sure std will suck speak to Alyn at AS Performance - Rally Motorsport Specialists for some good advice or High Performance Brakes - Supplying AP and Brembo brake kits for road and motorsport use

2: Once again don't know but i use DOT 5.1 DOT 5.1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (just shows the boiling points)

3: When i bought some to replace my 2 pots i took them to the polishing shop at work to get rid of the crap and old paint off them, then went for a glossy finish with Foliatec caliper paint but i do believe you can use this instead Halfords V High Temperature Engine Enamel Paint Matt Black 250ml from Halfords Price £5.99 or Hammerite

Just using grooved disks (and or drilled) make a significant difference?

I spoke to a couple of companies in the past week about getting all my disks/pads replaced. The main outcome was try a better pad. Disks should be fine for fast road/track use but its the pad that induces brake fade.

Hmm How Come? I take it its the Pad which takes to omuch heat.

Red Stuff ceramic pads a better choice? I do like the look of grooved disks, so might isntead of spunking 1k on an upgrade, opt for better std disks and better pads for the std calipers.

So what about the brake fliud? I would imagine this to make the largest difference with brake fade no?

Some pads dont disperse heat well enough or work well at high temperatures. Give ASperformance a call as the chap I spoke to there seemed extremely helpful and has possibly saved me from spending lots I didnt need to.

1. Std discs/pads will overheat after the first 3-4 corners. Changing the pads would be my first priority as they are not designed to work within the operating temperatures that a track/hard driving will produce. Uprated discs will be of benefit.

2. Again, get something that is designed for the job (don't go by DOT rating). I would recommend RBF600 or ATE Super.

3. Hammerite - have a seach on here for previous threads.

and EBC Redstuff is not advisable as they wear VERY quickly.

You'll need to upgrade the rear pads also.

Std 4 pot calipers, grooved disks of std size? What brand of pads then?

How long we talking with the red stuffs?

brembo seem to do performance pads from scoobyparts.

Should i notice a significant difference with these?
Scoobyparts Ltd BLACK DIAMOND GROOVED FRONT BRAKE DISCS

Scoobyparts Ltd BLACK DIAMOND FAST TRACK BRAKE PADS - FRONT
Scoobyparts Ltd BLACK DIAMOND PREDATOR BRAKE PADS - FRONT

I mean. I am totally new to this track lark, and i would still want the car easily drivable on the road.

Hopefully going to be having 3x20 min sessions at brands hatch novice day Sunday 14th Dec..

I did a couple of Trackdays on Std Sti Brembo calipers discs & they were fine all day, though mine is the lighter Spec C so less inertia on braking. I just changed brake fluid to Motul RBF600.

Now Iv changed pads to Perfromance Friction Z, have'nt really tested them out yet as only fitted last week, but initial bite from pads is a lot firmer than before.

I take it eh car works fine on the road. Do these fast pads require and warming or should i expect crap brakes for road use with them?

Im realy looking for an inbetween. Something good for the road, and that can cope with track days .

I guess we shall see next sunday how the standard calipers cope.
