Default Vibration when braking semi-hard

Hi All,

Had new pads and disks fitted approx 1500 miles ago, let them bed in for the first few hundred.

I noticed that whenever i have any weight in the car (the back of the car to be precise) and slowing down say from 70 to a stop on a slip road I get a loud drone (been told this is due to the grooved disks) and a vibration through the steering wheel.

If i replicate the exact test again - same road, same speed, same day but with just me in the car there is no vibration!

Any explanations?

Brakes work very well indeed and stop extremely hard if required. It cant be a warping issue as it would vibrate all the time. This just does it when i have people in the back!

The standard STI disks and Pads certainly didnt do it before.

Cheers
Iain

Question

Take a look at the surface of the disc to see if there are any darkish patches on the surface of the disc..

I had a similar thing with the OEM 4pots om my WRX with uprated pads and hoses. Supposedly it was down to pad transfer, caused by excessive heat/gasses between pad and disc.. Feels like disc rotor is warped, when in fact they very rarely do..!

Saying that, even fully loaded from 70ish with steady braking it shouldn't be happening..! Does it happen if you're alone, but really give the brakes some repeated stick, say from 80+ down to 10..?

Could be that you haven't properly bedded them in and they need some stick. As above, from >80mph @ +90% max braking down to 10mph (NOTE not to a complete stop, or if you have to, do don't leave foot on the pedal whilst stationary). Repeat 6-8 times in quick succession, then cruise without touching brakes for a few miles if possible to cool down..

What pads are you using..?

I'll give the max braking thing a try as it could be they arent bedded in properly.

I have never noticed it when its just me in the car - only when loaded up and the times it did it the chaps in the passenger and back were quite heavy!!

They are godspeed disks (grooved) and kevlar pads

I have the same problem with my setup, i recently upgraded to 4pot calipers, red dot disks, and ferrodo pads (all used but plenty of life left) and when i brake from around 90 i get the same vibration/droning you are explaining, the pads are also excessively noisy when pulling up, really makes me not want to use them! I'm even thinking of replacing them as it does my head in so much!
