why use shims on STi brembo's

Default why use shims on STi brembo's
mornin all. im just wondering why do you need to use the shims when replacing brake pads? what does it do?

can i leave them off and if so will my pads still klonk, as new pads in brembos do apparently?

These are anti squeal shims. Leaving them out won't do any harm but brakes may squeal (surprise), depends on pads you use. Personally I leave them out as I think brake feel is slightly better without.

how about if i use copper grease on the back of the pads instead of them ?

I use copper grease always, shims or not.

Yes, always copper grease backs of pads and edges.
