Default vibration

Got an 03 STI with performance friction front discs and pads. Slow the car very well but as soon as you touch the brakes there's a vibation through the steering wheel. From speed there is also a droning sound. These have done less than 8000 miles so look in good shape.....

Any ideas ?

droning noise can be common with drilled and/or grvd discs, however you should ahve no vibration at all................

is it only when you touch the brakes and thro' the pedal or s/wheel??
when did it occur and under what circumstances??

Hi
If you are getting shaking through the steering wheel under braking , then the discs are not running true in the discs , there is runout either on the drive flanges or discs , it could be something as simple as rust or muck on the flange face so the discs aren't sitting completely true.It could be pad deposits , warped hubs or warped discs.
To find out exactly what is wrong , you need to check the runout on the hubs and discs , it will have to come apart to do it properly
Hope this helps
Cheers Ian

As above, pop the wheel off remove the caliper/pads the disc can now be gently prised away from the hub. Give the mounting face a good clean and a wipe with meths to remove any loosened deposits. Refit and tighten securely.

It does sound to me that the discs may well be warped as I had a similar sensation when braking, quite a judder through the wheel. New discs and the problem went. If you have plenty of wear left on the discs I do believe you can have them skimmed and this will flatten the surface. I was quoted £50 for the skimming, however, I chose an upgrade instead.

I can assure you warped discs can almost shake your arms off, I know from experience! In fact mine felt like the whole car was shuddering.
