Default Legal Tyre question

My front tyre is worn on the wall but the grips in the middle are really deep !

Its smooth ! I was planning to swap the front to back, but just need to make sure its still legal ??

It passed its MOT but still !

You won't do any DAMAGE replacing one out of four, but really you it's accepted good practice to replace both tyres on the same axle at the same time.

I have EXACTLY the same problem (I blame it on roundabouts ;-) )
So there's no problems with diffs or anything having one fresh tyre and 3 part worn ones?

If money is an issue (and who doesn't have this issue atm..? ) why not try an source a good part worn of the same type already fitted (probably easier said than done, but a post in the wanted section might help)..?

That way you can put a bit aside until 2 or all 4 need changing with new rubber.

Other wise try and buy two new tyres at least. Fitting a new tyre with ~9mm tread on the same axle as one with >50% less is asking for trouble IMHO (from a handling point of view btw)..

Another thing, get your alignment checked. A local kwik-fit/halfords type of fitter should be able to give a reasonable assessment, if not very precise (ie not capable of a proper geom. setup) it will at least give a good indication and a check is usually FOC..

Other wise your new tyres will suffer the same fate.

Finally, rotating f-r every 6k helps even out the wear, although it will mean all 4 will need to be replaced when needed. IMHO this is the best way, just need to save in advance for it..
