Why do we modify our cars?

Why do we modify our cars?
Simple question, maybe not so simple answer.
Take me, I love the way my car drives now (it's basically standard + ppp)
yet i cannot stop looking at ways to improve this and that and generally tinker with it.
I know from past experience though that you need to be very prudent otherwise you destroy the balance that the standard car has.
So why do we do it? (Road car users)
How much better are your cars than when they were standard ?

Hmm i know what you mean just upgrading in 1 area can lead to car inbalance. For example no point in getting an classic to over 300 without improving brakes/suspension first as its asking for trouble. But depends what you mean and what mods are being done.
My car is twice the car it was when standard

I think it's mainly because we can. Imprezas have always been relatively easily/cheaply modded (huge aftermarket)..
Totally agree about doing balanced mods. In fact it's a bit like building your own PC, no point in going for the latest/fastest CPU, loads of memory etc but having a ****e graphics card..! One word, bottle necks (OK two..)..!
If modded correctly/sensibly the difference between standard car is night and day..!
