Default ABS issues??

hi folks, can anyone tell me if there are any tell tale signs if i have problems with the ABS on my MY99 classic. the reason i ask is that from time to time i get a rough gravel feel on the brake pedal and the braking seems to go light. it happens intermittently. for example, it was very apparent when driving in snow, and also on other 'slidey' surfaces, but it can happen out of the blue when normal driving.
am i missing something here? , could this be something else, and if it is an ABS issue is it likely to be expensive.
the car has standard pads n 4 pots, but i have grooved discs, braided hoses, ferrodo pads, and dot 5.1 at the ready for replacing.
the above has been a problem over the last year or so. any ideas would be most welcomed.
thanks.

thats the abs working doing what it should be doing, if it detects a problem it will put the light on.
sometimes though it can activate whilst braking over bumps or if the abs ring is cracked it can activate under braking as well

thanks. thats the answer i was hoping to get back. i've not had a car with ABS before, and yes, it sometimes happens when braking over small bumps.
